How Spaced Repetition Works (And Why Cramming Doesn't)

You've probably noticed this before: you cram for a test, do fine the next day, and two weeks later you can barely remember any of it. That's not a memory problem — it happens to everyone. The more useful question isn't "how do I get a better memory," it's "why does when you review something matter so much more than how much you review it."

Forgetting is fast, and it's predictable

In the 1880s, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a simple experiment on himself: memorize something, then test his own recall at set intervals afterward. What he found was that forgetting isn't random — it follows a fairly consistent curve. Recall drops sharply in the first day or two after learning something, then levels off. Most of what you forget, you forget fast, and you forget it early.

That's the part cramming gets wrong. A study session the night before a test puts information into short-term memory just long enough to survive the exam, but that's not the same as actually learning it — there was never a second exposure at the point where it was about to be forgotten, which is exactly when review does the most good.

Why timing matters more than time spent

Here's the counterintuitive part: reviewing something you already remember well is mostly wasted effort. The review that actually moves something into long-term memory is the one that happens right before you would have forgotten it — early enough that you can still recall it with effort, late enough that the recall isn't trivial. Too early, and you're just re-reading something you already know. Too late, and you've already forgotten it and you're re-learning it from scratch.

This is the entire idea behind spaced repetition: instead of studying everything on a fixed schedule, track how well you actually know each individual card and adjust its review timing accordingly. A card you rate "easy" gets pushed weeks out. A card you rate "hard" comes back the next day. Over time, your study time naturally shifts toward the things you're actually at risk of forgetting, instead of re-reviewing things you already know cold.
